Practically, I found the Cavallier reasonable RF quiet. Fiat Uno, too noisy. Diesels are definately better, they have a bigger battery too. Use an ohm-meter to verify which part of the connector goes to where. Presto. It's really that simple. Which one to buy ? To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu Vince, you are jumping in the deep end ! Could I suggest that you do not buy an expensive radio until after you have gained some experience with a cheap one, formed your own opinions, and found out what your interests are likely to be. I advise buying an old but functioning radio as a learning exercise. These things have done most of their depreciation, so when you have found what you hate and what you like about it, you can sell it and get almost all of your money back allowing you to go out and buy a radio that will accurately fit your needs. The TS50 is an interesting radio. It has been carefully optimised for use in modern cars, and the controls seem well designed to make mobile use much easier than with anything else. BUT a number of sacrifices were made to fit it in that small box. This radio is OK used with typically inefficient mobile antennae, but suffers overload if used with the kinds of antennae that you would likely erect at home. These radios are new on the market, have excited many people and so fetch very high prices new. You would suffer a lot of financial loss if you bought one and then decided to change. Different people may be enthusiasts for different brands and may absolutely hate others, but look at the IC735 which has got a reputation for good performance and also the FT890, FT990. No manufacturer is perfect, all have produced radios that proved to be junk. The TS140, TS680, and TS440 that I've had on the spectrum analyser in my shack were not as clean on transmit as I would like, I think one of the mixers in the TX path is run at too high a level in order to economise on amplifiers later in the path. Hope this helps a little, Bon chance David GM4ZNX ------------------------------ Date: 16 Mar 1994 23:53:31 -0400 From: ihnp4.ucsd.edu!dog.ee.lbl.gov!agate!howland.reston.ans.net!torn!csd.unb.ca!upei.ca!peinet.pe.ca!peinet.pe.ca!not-for-mail@network.ucsd.edu Subject: Want mods for Alinco DJ-F1 HT.
